Corduroy is BACK

I’ve always loved corduroy but it seems to go in an out of style. But it’s back for fall! I’ve gathered and linked a few pieces I’m loving right now – they give off such a retro 70s vibe.

These black flares are from AE, the brick pair from Magnolia Boutique and the gray pair also from AE.

Can’t forget about your feet! These high top TOMS are SO CUTE.

How would you style your corduroy?

The Beauty Suit

As women, we’re constantly bombarded by society to look younger, stay slim, have blemish free skin and frizz free hair.

Social media hasn’t helped us out at all – fashion bloggers are constantly reminding us we need to have our eye lashes filled, our eyebrows microbladed, our skin freshly spray tanned and that last week’s top we bought from the clearance rack is already out of style.

Superficiality is consuming western society and in The Beauty Suit, Lauren Shields argues that women are being told that our worth is defined by our looks and even though the measurement of our hemline is supposed to liberate us, it actually can stifle our path to empowerment.

So she set out to do an experiment – for nine months out of her life, she was shedding “The Suit” as she calls it, and dressing modestly. No make-up, no heals and no blow-outs – Sheilds decided to take inspiration from American Muslim women who wear a hijab for feminist reasons and see how dressing modestly affected her life and how people treated her.

This was a fascinating read and one that most women will relate to. The first time Sheilds goes out in public without make-up, she’s mortified to show her bare face in public. Will someone ask her if she feels alright? Are people noticing the blemishes on her face? What women who wears make-up on a daily basis hasn’t felt that way?

She noticed that men stopped paying attention to her when she’d go out with her friends, preferring someone who looked like they “made an effort.” People asked her if she was a nun. As she documented her experiment for Salon, fellow feminists criticized her saying she was trying to dictate how other women dressed.

Her entire experiment is coupled with the way religion views modesty, so there is quite a bit of historical context throughout as well as a lot of feminist exploration of the patriarchy, toxic masculinity, slut shaming and victim blaming.

However, Shields focuses so much on how women do all these things to please men, but she never really addresses the idea that women put on a full face of make-up for other women. I would have to agree that at first, women try to look their best to catch a mate, but once our significant other has seen us barefaced and naked, we don’t care so much about always looking attractive for them. Instead, we put on “The Suit” because we’re constantly scrutinizing – and judging – how other women look and we know they’re doing the same to us.

(If you’re a woman and you’re reading this saying “I’d never do that” then I’d have to call B.S. on you because ALL women have done this at least once in their life.)

I personally would have liked a little more about what she was feeling and how people were reacting to her experiment versus the heavy focus on feminism and religion but overall, this is an intriguing read and a challenge to women to look past the materialistic facets of our lives and start embracing that “life’s too short to keep cramming ourselves into a costume that tells us we’re secondary in the world.”

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Items Review

There’s still time to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary sale! The sale ends on Aug. 5th and there are still things in stock and restocking. I finally got all my orders and here’s a review of the products I purchased, as well as the few that I returned.

BP Waffle Knit Cardigan.
This is probably my favorite item from the sale. It’s going to be great for fall and winter and I love the buttons! I can wear it to work or as a casual thrown on sweater. It does fit slightly oversized, but the small was a great fit for me.

Socialite Henley
This is a great layering piece that will look pretty by itself and then with a warmer outer later as it gets colder. Unfortunately, this sold out almost immediately. I bought the blush color but also wanted the camo pattern too. It might restock after the sale, so if you had your eye on it, keep checking!

Ugg Daley Tall Boot
I am not a fan of classic Uggs. I’ve always thought they were, well, ugly. My mom got me a super cute pair last year that look nothing like the classic style and they were so comfortable and warm, so I decided to invest in this black suede tall boot for winter. The fit is very true to size and I think they will still be comfortable with boot socks. Very well made and hit just below the knee, which is perfect for me.

Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Cardigan
I ordered this fully expecting to return it. $70 for a cardigan…ON SALE? People raved so I gave it a chance and it’s probably the most luxurious cardigan I will own. I sized up to a medium and it fits great (reviews said the arms were tight in a small). I will most definitely wear it to work, but it would also be cozy for lounging around the house. An investment piece but sure to last for years to come.

Edwardian Ear Crawlers
This gives you the look of multiple holes in your ears without actually having to pierce them again. I’m wearing these today and they’re very pretty – just enough sparkle to jazz any outfit up.

Thread and Supply Brandon Fleece Jacket
I ordered this on day one and it sat in my pending orders for about a week, then promptly got canceled. On a whim, I checked a few days later and it had restocked in my size, so I tried again. It’s a heavy fleece jacket and will keep you toasty and warm in the winter. It does run big – I probably could have used an XS, but it doesn’t come in anything smaller than a S.

1State Studded Bootie

This is a gorgeous bootie that gives off a rocker vibe. I ordered in the black and while I loved it, it was just too flashy for me. I really wanted to keep it but I couldn’t see myself wearing it much and at a $100 price point, felt it would be a waste of money. I do really like the gray version – it seems more subtle but since I bought the tall Ugg boots, I can’t really spend anymore on shoes or I will go over my budget that I set.

Madewell Jeans

All the bloggers were raving about these jeans but I sent mine back. They ran very large, bagged out in the legs and just weren’t flattering on me.

Things I Wasn’t Fast Enough to Snag

Caslon Draped Front Jacket

This was in-stock for a few days and I just didn’t pull the trigger on it. I definitely regret that, because it would be a flattering fall staple. Oh well, can’t buy everything!

Lucky Brand Wedge Bootie

This one was  in my cart for a while, then sold out in the two colors I liked. I have other wedges, so I didn’t really need them but they were cute.

Caslon Cardigan

I didn’t see as part of the sale until it was sold out of my size. It never restocked in anything smaller than a medium and reviews said it was huge, so I didn’t want to chance it.

What items did you get? Let me know in the comments!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks

This is my second year shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks. I’m not rabid about it like a lot of people are, but I do like a good deal so I purchased a few things this morning to add to my fall/winter wardrobe.

The website was extra glitchy all morning, which was quite frustrating. In fact, I didn’t even think my order went through but then my items were showing up as “shipped” so I called to make sure it was processing and sure enough, customer service confirmed it had been placed.

Here are the items I picked up!

Socialite Thermal in soft rock.
Depending on how this fits and availability, I might get this in the camo color too. Nordstrom does have free shipping/returns, but I didn’t want to go overboard and have to return a  bunch of stuff I didn’t like. Thermals are my favorite for fall, then layering under other pieces in the winter.

BP Oversized Waffle Knit Cardigan.
I really, really love this one and the price point is great! It says the small is sold out but sometimes inventory changes, so if that’s the size you need, keep checking!

1.STATE Loka Studded Bootie.

This one was my splurge. I love the rocker edge and lower heel – most booties have higher heels and that’s just not my style. I bought these in black leather, but also really like the gray color. If I don’t like them in person, I may exchange for a different color!

Thread and Supply Fleece Zip Up.

I wanted this last year but the price tag was just too hefty, even when it ran on sale at the end of the season. Luckily, it’s part of this year’s Anniversary Sale!

Things I’m considering:

You Can Never Go Wrong with a Band Tee

I’m a huge fan of vintage band tees and surprisingly enough, Target has a fantastic selection that changes quite frequently and they’re usually at pretty affordable price points. I’ve even found a few for my collection in the men’s section!

Here are a few of my favorites I’ve acquired over the years and links to similar products in case you want to build your collection up as well 🙂

Fleetwood Mac Tee by Free People. Sold Out but you can find it on Poshmark! (That’s where I got mine)

Guns N Roses baseball tee. Target – last season. Similar here.

Tom Petty muscle tank. Chaser brand. My style is sold out. Similar here and here.

AC/DC tee. Also from Target. Several seasons ago. Love this one instead!

Beach Boys tour tank. In stock at Target and comes in plus sizes too.

Aerosmith tour tee from Recycled Karma brands. On sale!
